The Upson Lee tennis team’s run at a state title ended yesterday as they fell to a very strong Oconee County team. This was the Knights’ only loss to a AAA team this season. In a fitting end to their great season, the guys played some of the best tennis of the year forcing the Warriors to earn every victory. Our guys represented our school remarkably this year and deserve a shout out if you pass them in the halls. Seniors: Silas Laughman, John Hernandez, and Jed Weatherford showed great leadership for this team over the last few years. Their work ethic and love for the game pushed those around them to achieve excellence. The underclassmen (Self-titled 4 the 3) also made huge contributions this season. Juniors: Tanner Wilson and Grayson Sheppard have worked hard and will be ready to take over the leadership duties next year. Returning freshman: Sawyer Wilson and Cutter Bowen also showed much improvement and will be ready to help the Knights make a push again next season. This team’s accomplishments include:
2021 Undefeated Region 2-AAA Champions
2X Sweet 16 2019, 2021 (Covid prevented that from being 3X)
Elite 8 2021
They also provided the most exciting match in the round of 16 against Appling County. If you weren’t there, you missed one of the greatest comebacks in tennis history!! (I may be biased on that.)
To put the season in perspective, the Knights were 13-4 this season losing only to the following teams:
Oconee County who is now in the Final 4 in AAA
Lagrange (lost 2-3) who made it to the Elite 8 in AAAA
Stratford Academy 2x who are now in the Elite 8 in their division and have won 4 of the last 5 State Championships.
Job well done guys!!
